On Sunday May 29, 2016, the Filipino Pastoral Ministry of Our Lady of Pompei Church celebrated the 26th Annual Flores de Mayo and Santakrusan sa Village. It was a nice sunny afternoon Memorial weekend perfect for the Santakrusan procession.
For 26 years, the “Santakrusan and Flores de Mayo sa Village” has been parading the streets of Greenwich Village in Manhattan. The celebration still remains the focal point of the beautiful celebration of our Filipino tradition and culture in the village for the devotees, parishioners and tourists in lower Manhattan.
The celebration started with the Holy Mass for the Solemnity of the Body and Blood of Christ celebrated by Fr. Jonathan Loverita, the Parochial Vicar and the Director of the Filipino Pastoral Ministry of Our Lady of Pompeii Church. The church was full of devotees during the 3:00 PM Filipino Mass. The San Lorenzo Ruiz Choir of New York sang during the Mass and in the Crowning of the Image of the Virgin Mary and Flower Offering ceremony. Sally Alonso was the Lector of the Readings and the Altar Servers of the Mass were Andre Zabala, Allan Campos and Edgar Manliclic.
In his greetings after the Mass, Fr. Walter Tonelotto, c.s., Pastor, encouraged everyone to continue in upholding the Filipino religious and cultural traditions in New York so that the next generation could emulate.
The Crowning of the Image of the Virgin Mary and the offering of flowers by the boys and girls is the highlight of the celebration, which was officiated by Fr. Jonathan Loverita following the Mass. The three major Sagalas- Reina Elena – Geraldine Guesa, Reina de las Flores of Astoria Queens – Kristine Joy Barretto of Long Island, and the Reina Santo Rosario – Elizabeth Dimatera of the Bronx participated in the crowning ceremony followed by the Santakrusan procession in the surrounding streets of the church.
This year we have many new participants to experience the Santakrusan tradition for the first time. We hope you had a wonderful time and we will again see you next year.
Words are never enough to express our endless gratitude to all the sagalas, the flower boys and girls, the bearers, ushers, marshals, and the parents who encouraged their children to participate, the men and women and families who have been with us through the 26 years that we celebrate the Flores de Mayo and Santakrusan sa Village.
The reception was held at the Fr. Demo Hall after the Santakrusan procession. Everybody was treated to sumptuous Filipino food prepared by the FPM volunteers, friends and staff.
Thank you to the Filipino School of New York and New Jersey students for their dance presentation of the “Maglalatik” at the Reception of the Flores de Mayo and Santakrusan sa Village. The Red Mike Marching Band played some music that livened up the celebration. Rogelio Penaverde Jr. serenaded the Sagalas and the full house Fr. Demo Hall during the presentation of all the participants in the Santakrusan. Thank you to Sol Tulang and Karhl Bigornia for making the program upbeat and informative for everyone. Good Job.
The Filipino Community of Our Lady of Pompeii Pastoral Ministry under the direction of Parochial Vicar Fr. Jonathan Loverita of Our Lady of Pompeii together with the Santo Nino Prayer Groups of New York will continue to uphold this Filipino tradition. Your dedication and continued support to this endeavor enable us to keep going.
Thank you everyone. The success of the Flores de Mayo and Santakrusan sa Village 2016 was made possible by all of your dedication and wholehearted support. Maraming Salamat Po!
